There are severasl things you can observe with a telescope: (1) The moon,(2) the sun (with a filter),(3) the planets, (4) and double stars, that is two stars that rotate around each other. They are the most basic objects to observe. More interesting (to me at least) are deep sky objects. The first category of deep sky objects are open clusters, clusters of stars in our galaxy that are bound by gravity. Next is globular clusters, clusters of stars that rotate around our galaxy like little galaxies. Next is galaxies themselves. I don't reccomend starting observing with galaxies, as they can be disappointing to see, faint as they are. Next are emmision nebulae, clouds of gas that emit their own light. Then reflection nebulae, clouds of dust that reflect the light from nearby stars. My favorite is planetary nebulae. Planetaries result from solar winds causing the gases around stars to expand and glow. Pick what piques your curiosity.
